Reading foreign books and newspapers is hard when your vocabulary is limited. Why not buy a couple of children’s books, preferably ones you’ve either read in English as a child or read to your own children? Knowing the gist of the story will help you to understand what is going on and stop you from reaching for the dictionary every second word.

Another good source of reading material is the local version of the TV Times, or any of the celebrity magazines. These contain plenty of pictures and short news items written in a modern style, giving you plenty of colloquial usage.
