A Tip from The Greatest Moving Abroad Tips in the World

Before continuing with the (hopefully amusing) tale of our  relocation to France, I thought it would be good to give a flavour of what The Greatest Moving Abroad Tips in the World is really all about. I've been moving from country to country for thirty years and I know that moving abroad can be as daunting as it is exciting.

The Greatest Moving Abroad Tips in the World was written to help anyone who might be planning to move abroad, those who already live abroad but are looking for advice on a variety of issues (see chapter headings on the right), those who might think living abroad would be too difficult to cope with or anyone who has ever dreamed of relocating abroad, but has no idea where to start when it comes to planning.

The following tip, taken from the Choices, Choices! chapter, gives some good pointers on how to decide which country might suit you.

Where on earth?

With so many places to choose from, how do you decide which one is right for you and your family? Well you could try sticking a pin in an atlas and hoping for the best, but you might end up at the North Pole, which isn’t a great spot for sun-worshipers! A better idea is to make a shortlist of places you really like the sound of and then answer the questions below in respect of each. Less exciting I know, but much more effective.

• What are the legal requirements for residency?
• Is the cost of living within your means?
• Can you afford the type of property you want?
• Can you speak (or learn) the language?
• Is it possible to work?
• Is there enough to do if you don’t work?
• Is the climate suitable?
• Is crime a problem?
• Will finding good schools be difficult?
• Is high-quality healthcare readily available?

Before you throw the idea (and this book) out of the window, don’t panic! The tips which follow are designed to show you how to find the answers to all those questions and more.

The above tip is copied from the Choices, Choices! chapter of The Greatest Moving Abroad Tips in the World.

  2. I think you've covered all the bases, personally the most important issue was expat health insurance, I have some underlying health worries & had to be sure that I wouldn't need 10 credit cards to keep them in check!
